Building a Greener Web
Discover how Hashtag Web & Digital Agency is reducing the carbon footprint of websites through green hosting, efficient design, and sustainable development practices.
When most people think about sustainability, their minds go straight to electric cars, recycling, or renewable energy. But there’s a growing area of sustainability that often goes unnoticed – the digital world. Every website visit, every email sent, and every file stored online consumes energy, and that energy leaves a carbon footprint.
At Hashtag Web & Digital Agency, we’ve always believed that innovation and responsibility go hand in hand. Over the past year, we’ve made a conscious effort to ensure our web design and development practices are not just creative and functional, but also sustainable.
The spark - Conversations that got us thinking
In the last 12 months, we’ve had the pleasure of working with two forward-thinking clients in the sustainability sector – EcoMerit and Change by Degrees.
Both organisations are dedicated to helping businesses and communities reduce their environmental impact – EcoMerit through its Environmental Certification and Support programmes and Change by Degrees as a leading international platform for Sustainability and Green Skills learning.
Naturally, as part of their website development process, discussions arose around digital sustainability, and specifically, the carbon footprint of their new websites.
These conversations prompted us to take a step back and ask ourselves … “What more can we, as developers, do to reduce the environmental impact of the websites we create and help to build a greener web?”
Diving deeper - Measuring and reducing website emissions
Website emissions might sound abstract, but they’re measurable. Every image loaded, every video streamed, and every script executed consumes electricity – from servers to data centres to user devices. The cleaner and lighter your site, the less energy it uses.
Following those initial discussions, Hashtag’s directors, Shane Ryan and Gavin Moloney, took a deep dive into the topic. The result was a new internal standard operating procedure for our web team, designed to ensure sustainability is part of every project we deliver.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Website Carbon Footprint Checks – Every new site we build is now tested using a carbon footprint calculator to measure its environmental impact.
- Optimisation for Efficiency – We reduce image sizes, limit unnecessary scripts, and streamline code to make our websites as lightweight and efficient as possible.
- Green Hosting for All Clients – After discussions with our hosting provider, SiteGround, we made the decision to migrate all client websites to their Green Hosting infrastructure, which is powered by renewable energy and built for efficiency.
Why sustainable web design matters
The average website produces around 0.5 grams of CO₂ per page view. It might not sound like much, but multiply that by thousands of visits per month, and by millions of websites worldwide, and the impact becomes significant.
A sustainable website isn’t just good for the planet. It’s also:
- Faster to load, improving user experience and SEO rankings.
- More accessible, especially on lower-powered devices or slower connections.
- Cheaper to host and maintain, thanks to reduced data usage and streamlined performance.
In short, what’s better for the planet is also better for your business.
How other businesses and developers can make a difference
If you’re a business owner, marketer, or fellow developer, there are practical steps you can take to make your digital presence more eco-friendly:
- Choose green hosting – Partner with providers committed to renewable energy, like SiteGround.
- Optimise your media – Compress images, use modern formats (like WebP), and lazy-load content where possible.
- Limit third-party scripts – Every extra plugin or tracker adds data requests (and energy consumption).
- Reduce video autoplay – Consider static images or user-triggered playback instead.
- Regularly audit your site – Tools like Website Carbon Calculator or Ecograder can help you monitor your impact.
Small changes, when implemented consistently, lead to measurable results.
